Introduction to NuvePro

For ease of use, a lab has been set up from where the AWS console can be accessed easily and the cost incurred can be managed.

In the following video, you will be familiarised with the Nuvepro dashboard and also learn about a few best practices that should be followed while using EMR. It is always important to follow these best practices as they will prevent you from spending unnecessary AWS credits.

Note:

You might see a different console as shown in the video but the buttons required in the whole module are the same as shown in video.

Note:

By clicking on the Get Usage Details button to know your billing details, you will receive an email containing a folder about the same. This feature has been updated and is not the same as shown in the video. Make sure your region is set to N.Virginia.

Note:

Please note that if you click on the Stop Resources button, then the EC2 instances assigned to your EMR instances will stop automatically as well. Also, all EC2 instances (including the ones attached to your EMR cluster) will stop at 4 am daily, so please make sure that you have backed up all files and folders present in your EMR cluster if you are working late.

Notes on the NuvePro Lab

While you are working on your lab, there are some critical pointers that we’d like you to keep in mind:

  • It may take some time (up to three hours) for activation of your AWS account after clicking the Jump to Console button for the first time. Please get in touch with your student mentor if you are unable to access your AWS dashboard even after three hours.
  • As a general practice, please terminate your EMR instances when you are not using them.
  • Your usage bill information is displayed on the left panel of your Nuvepro dashboard. Monitor this closely.
  • At any given time, you will be assigned a ‘budget value’. This value can only be increased in certain steps. You can find out this value from your student mentor. From this budget value, subtract your usage to find how much credit you have remaining.
  • Please add the security group of ‘Anywhere’ to your AWS lab before you start any work on your AWS EMR cluster.
  • Please note that the billing of an EMR instance happens on an hourly basis. So, do not start-stop your instance multiple times. As soon as you start your instance, the minimum amount that is charged is the per hour amount – even if you stop your EMR instance in another minute. So, now, if you start it again, the charge of one hour will be deducted from your budget. Hence, we advise you to work with your instance for longer stretches (at least one hour) or avoid starting-stopping the instance multiple times (at least not within an hour).
