You have studied HMMs in detail and have also used them for building POS taggers. In general, HMMs can be used for any sequence classification task, such as NER. However, many NER tasks and datasets are far more complex than tasks such as POS tagging, and therefore, more sophisticated sequence models have been developed and widely accepted in the NLP community.
In this segment, you’ll study some limitations of HMMs and understand why they are not preferred for not preferred for the NER we are trying to solve.
